Peoria’s Environmental Initiatives: A Community Effort

Peoria, Illinois, is actively engaging in environmental initiatives to promote sustainability and resilience. These efforts encompass waste management, stormwater control, and community education.

Advancements in Waste Management

The Peoria County Sustainability and Resource Conservation Department has been instrumental in improving waste diversion rates. Since 1996, the county has increased its diversion rate from 25% to 37% through programs like recycling, composting, and a commercial recycling ordinance. Residents are encouraged to participate in curbside recycling programs or utilize drop-off centers available throughout the county.

Stormwater Management and Pollution Prevention

Peoria faces challenges with stormwater runoff, which can carry pollutants into local waterways. The city’s storm sewer system is separate from the sanitary sewer system, meaning stormwater isn’t treated before entering creeks and streams. To address this, Peoria has a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit that regulates untreated stormwater discharges. Residents can contribute by avoiding pouring chemicals down storm drains, managing yard waste responsibly, and using pesticides and fertilizers conservatively.

Community Engagement and Education

PeoriaCorps is a pre-apprentice program for young adults aged 18 to 24, focusing on green infrastructure. Members receive environmental literacy education and hands-on experience in green solutions for stormwater challenges. They help maintain green infrastructure projects, plant trees, and conduct litter cleanups, contributing to the city’s environmental health.

Addressing Climate Change Risks

Peoria is proactively addressing climate change risks, including increased heat and precipitation. Projections indicate a rise in days with temperatures above 93.4ºF and an increase in extreme precipitation events. The city is implementing green infrastructure solutions, such as permeable pavements and rain gardens, to mitigate these effects and enhance community resilience.

Through these collective efforts, Peoria is fostering a sustainable environment, demonstrating the power of community involvement in environmental stewardship.
