Peoria, Illinois, may be nestled in the heart of the Midwest, but its connections span the globe. Our city’s international relationships and cultural exchanges have enriched our community, fostering understanding and collaboration across borders.
Celebrating 50 Years with Friedrichshafen
This year marks the 50th anniversary of Peoria’s sister city relationship with Friedrichshafen, Germany. Established in 1976 through ties between Caterpillar Inc. and Zeppelin, this partnership has grown into one of the most active sister city relationships in the United States. Over the decades, numerous youth exchanges, business collaborations, and personal friendships have flourished. Anniversary events are planned in Peoria from June 3 to June 7 and in Friedrichshafen from September 30 to October 4, bringing together participants and community supporters to honor this enduring bond.
GlobalFest: A Celebration of Diversity
GlobalFest Central Illinois is an annual event that brings together and celebrates the diverse cultures thriving in our region. Attendees can experience global music, dance, displays, costumes, languages, and international foods, all under one roof. This immersive experience not only showcases the rich cultural tapestry of Central Illinois but also promotes understanding and appreciation among community members.
Peoria Area World Affairs Council: Engaging with Global Issues
The Peoria Area World Affairs Council (PAWAC) has been a cornerstone in bringing global perspectives to our community. Through events and discussions, PAWAC addresses critical international issues affecting the United States and the world. For instance, in April 2026, PAWAC hosted a program titled “Defending Life and Land: Indigenous Rights, the Amazon, and Environmental Justice,” featuring speaker Carlos Salinas, who shared firsthand experiences working alongside Indigenous communities in the Amazon. Such programs provide valuable insights into global challenges and their local implications.
America250: Commemorating the Nation’s Milestone
As the United States approaches its 250th anniversary in 2026, Peoria is actively participating in the America250 celebrations. The Peoria Riverfront Museum is hosting a series of exhibitions to commemorate this milestone, including “Joyful Resistance,” “The Promise of Liberty,” and “Deep Rivers/Long Roads: The Journey of America.” These exhibitions offer residents and visitors an opportunity to reflect on the nation’s history and Peoria’s role within it.
Peoria’s global engagements, from sister city relationships to cultural festivals and educational programs, highlight our community’s commitment to fostering international understanding and collaboration. These connections not only enrich our local culture but also position Peoria as a vibrant, globally-minded city.
