Peoria is actively addressing its aging infrastructure and community challenges through a series of initiatives aimed at improving public safety and quality of life.
Addressing Aging Infrastructure
The city’s Public Works Department has identified several critical issues stemming from outdated stormwater systems. Since June 2014, over 1,250 service requests have been logged for drainage-related problems, including structural failures in storm sewers, erosion in channels and ravines, and street flooding. These issues pose significant risks to public safety and property.
To combat these challenges, Peoria is implementing proactive measures to transition from reactive responses to preventive maintenance. This includes better monitoring of sewer pipes to extend their lifespan and making minor repairs before they escalate into major emergencies. Such efforts aim to protect the Illinois River and the health of the community.
Community Engagement and Housing Development
In addition to infrastructure improvements, Peoria is focusing on enhancing housing opportunities across all income brackets. The city has issued a ‘call to action’ for community aid and feedback to build more quality, affordable housing. This initiative seeks to address the ‘missing middle’ housing—small, single-family homes, duplexes, and fourplexes—that can meet the needs of residents at various life stages.
Mayor Rita Ali emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating that creating real opportunities and building the right teams are essential for moving projects forward. The city plans to invest in infrastructure, promote new development, and rehabilitate existing houses to provide safe and well-maintained rental housing.
Combined Sewer Overflow Alerts
Peoria continues to face challenges with combined sewer overflows (CSOs) into the Illinois River during heavy rainfall. Residents are advised to avoid full-body contact with the river downstream from Detweiller Marina during such events to prevent potential health risks. The city is working on projects to reduce CSOs as required under the Clean Water Act and the CSO Consent Decree.
Through these concerted efforts, Peoria demonstrates its commitment to improving infrastructure, housing, and overall community well-being.
