Peoria’s vibrant cultural tapestry was on full display at the inaugural GlobalFest Central Illinois, an event dedicated to celebrating the diverse communities that call our region home. Held at Five Points Washington, the festival offered attendees an immersive experience into the traditions, music, dance, and cuisines of over 25 cultural groups.
Organized by a dedicated committee, including Bradley University professor Angela Weck, GlobalFest aimed to highlight the rich diversity within Central Illinois. Weck emphasized, “The Peoria area is a really dynamic community, and we don’t give ourselves nearly enough credit for how cool the region is.”
The festival featured performances by the Peoria Ballet Company, Central Illinois Ballet Company, Peoria International Choir, and PJ Dance Academy. Children participated in an interactive “passport” activity, collecting stamps from various cultural booths, enhancing their understanding of global cultures.
Franklin Foulger, chairperson for the event committee, noted that GlobalFest represents a proactive approach to diversity and inclusion. “Instead of just talking about diversity and inclusion and feeling uncomfortable to talk about discrimination, we are going to give folks a very hands-on, visual, and physically immersive experience,” he stated.
As Peoria continues to embrace its multicultural identity, events like GlobalFest play a crucial role in fostering community unity and global understanding. The success of this inaugural event sets a promising precedent for future celebrations of cultural diversity in our region.
